Alcalde - Honduras
Alcalde (meaning: the mayor) smells intensely of fresh waffles even as ground coffee. This delicious organic coffee from Honduras comes from the highlands of Marcala.
The high-quality organic beans seduce with subtle nuances of vanilla and cocoa, wrapped in a velvety body. The taste experience is rounded off by a natural sweetness of forest honey, with slightly exotic aromas. This coffee is also ideal for making espresso (beautiful crema!), ristretto, café crème, in the French press or as filter coffee.
The Finca San Pablo of the coffee farmer Montgomery is located in the village of El Pastal in the renowned Montecillos-Marcala growing region in Honduras at 1,450 meters above sea level. He inherited part of the coffee-growing area from his grandfather. He grows coffee on around 7 hectares of land around the Finca San Pablo and produces around 110 quintals (approximately 5 tons) of green coffee every year. Montgomery produces a large part of his harvest as high-quality specialty coffee. Montgomery likes to experiment with the processing, continuing the tradition of his grandfather. The path to Finca San Pablo leads through a picturesque pine forest. This forest is also the source of the water supply for some communities, which is why Montgomery and his family have dedicated themselves to protecting the forest.
Finca San Pablo is increasingly becoming a meeting place for locals and coffee specialists from abroad. Step by step, Montgomery and his family are expanding the finca. There is much to marvel at around Finca San Pablo, such as the giant bamboo at the entrance to the coffee-growing area, which dates back to the time of Montgomery's grandfather. Equally impressive is the small fish farm, which provides a feast and additional income, especially during Holy Week.
If you follow the path further along the finca, you will come across Arabica coffee of various varieties such as Icatu, Pacamara, Bourbón, Lempira, Pahinema and a little Catuai, growing among mangoes, oranges, timber trees, marañones and other exotic fruits.
Montgomery has even written a history book about the Marcala coffee region. In 2010, he ran for mayor for the Unión Democrática. Although he narrowly missed out on being elected mayor, the villagers named his coffee “El Alcalde” (Spanish: the mayor) as they are convinced that he would make a big difference in Marcala as mayor.
Montgomery is extremely successful in coffee cultivation and has produced his “Honey” coffee exclusively for Kaffeemanufaktur Zürich this year and we roast the coffee just as exclusively for you, freshly harvested and gently to create the balanced Alcalde.
This coffee is certified organic and Fairtrade, which guarantees fair wages and sustainable cultivation methods.
